On October 20, 2019, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho made headlines at the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa with a daring remark challenging Deputy President William Ruto to join hands in supporting the Handshake.

As Joho invited Ruto to address the congregation, he jokingly challenged the Deputy President to support the Handshake, which is threatening to split the Jubilee party.

The crowd eagerly awaited Ruto's response, but the Deputy President tactfully avoided discussing the Handshake in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

Instead, Ruto diverted the crowd's attention by praising President Kenyatta for the development witnessed during his tenure and declared that the Build the Bridges Initiative (BBI) needs to be validated again by Kenyans.
