On October 19, 2019, a critical security breach occurred in Machakos County when Lukenya Assistant County Commissioner Elizabeth Karitu lost the keys to a container storing national examinations papers in Athi River, Machakos County.
According to a statement by Machakos County Commissioner Elizabeth Maina, Karitu was arrested after she went to report the loss of the keys at Parklands Police Station.
Ms. Karitu claimed that she lost the keys after thieves broke into her car in Nairobi and stole her handbag, which contained the keys.
However, Ms. Maina stated that Karitu claimed she had gone to Avenue Hospital in Nairobi and upon her return, she found her car had been broken into and her handbag stolen.
As a result of the incident, Karitu has been interdicted, and efforts have been made to replace the padlock with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
