On October 20, 2019, thousands of locals gathered at the refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront grounds in Mombasa to celebrate Mashujaa Day, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The event featured various performances, including songs and dances, with antique heroic songs such as 'Kenya nchi yetu tunaipenda' being performed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived at the venue around 11:30 am, marking the official start of the celebrations.

For the first time, the military match at national celebrations involved naval vessels and marine maneuvers through the Likoni Channel, in addition to the usual infantry and air force displays.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to address national and foreign policy issues, including the economy, foreign relations, and sticky issues surrounding youth unemployment, performance of the economy, national cohesion, and local grievances.

Security has been heightened in Mombasa, with the Kenya Navy joining the police for security operations, especially in areas adjacent to the venue.

The National Youth Service (NYS) has also been involved in the preparations, with the Mama Ngina Waterfront renovation costing Sh460 million.
