On Mashujaa Day, October 20, 2019, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emphasized the importance of supporting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in uniting Kenyans.

Speaking at the Mama Ngina Drive in Mombasa, Raila addressed the crowd and clarified his role in President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.

He recalled the Likoni channel dredging exercise, where he ordered the stoppage of the exercise to retrieve the bodies of a mother and daughter whose car plunged into the Indian Ocean.

Raila stated that he made the decision as any Kenyan would, adding that many had questioned his actions, asking 'who is speaking as a Kenyan?' He responded by saying 'I am speaking as a Kenyan.'

Raila also explained that the handshake between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta aimed to unite the East African Community countries, and that the initiative started with them.
