Published on October 20, 2019, Nairobi News reported that Gor Mahia assistant captain Joash Onyango has been absent from training sessions due to financial struggles.
Onyango, nicknamed the 'Berlin Wall' for his heroics in central defence, has been unable to attend training alongside his club captain Kenneth Muguna for the past fortnight.
The duo's absence has left the club's supporters in speculation mode, but Onyango's financial struggles have seemingly been revealed by a close friend.
According to the source, Onyango's financial struggles are a result of the club's dire financial situation, with him not receiving his salary for three months.
“He will not attend training because he cannot afford to,” explained the source.
Onyango has a family to take care of and bills to pay, making it difficult for him to attend training sessions.
Meanwhile, Muguna has denied the allegations, stating that he was away attending to personal matters and had informed the team manager Jolawi Obondo.
“I have family issues and until I finish them, I cannot promise when I will be back for training. The issue is really pressing and I have told the team manager,” Muguna said.
Gor Mahia coach Steve Polack has since appointed Joachim Oluoch and Charles Momanyi as interim captains.
