Wayne Rooney's Major League Soccer (MLS) adventure ended in disappointment on Saturday with a 5-1 extra-time playoff loss to Toronto FC, marking the end of his nearly two-year stint in the United States.
Rooney, the former England captain and Manchester United all-time leading scorer, was touted as the second coming of David Beckham when he joined DC United in 2018. However, his time in the MLS will be remembered as nothing more than a footnote in his illustrious career.
Despite his efforts, Rooney was unable to add to his legacy of getting his club into the postseason, but never winning a match. His departure from the MLS was as uneventful as his arrival, with Rooney dressing quietly and leaving the dressing room without saying a word.
DC United coach Ben Olsen reflected on Rooney's contributions, saying, 'I think he gave a lot to the organisation, he was a great team mate. I think he was good to our fans and he was very appreciative of the support he got with our fan base and the community, the DC area.'
Rooney's time in the MLS was marked by a few highlight-reel moments, including a brilliant long-range strike against Orlando, but ultimately, he failed to leave a lasting impact on the league.
Beckham's arrival in the MLS in 2007 had a significant impact on the league, and his legacy continues to be felt. In contrast, Rooney's departure from the MLS will be remembered as a disappointment, with the 33-year-old returning to England to join EFL Championship side Derby County as a player-coach.
