On 20 October 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred the highest award in Kenya, the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.), on Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathoner who made history by becoming the first human to break the two-hour marathon barrier.

The award was presented during the 2019 Mashujaa celebrations held at the Mama Ngina Waterfront grounds in Mombasa County.

As one of the dignitaries who graced the occasion, Kipchoge was recognized for his epic achievement, which has brought pride and glory to Kenya.

The Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya is the highest of the presidential awards, divided into three classes: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.), Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (E.G.H.), and Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (M.G.H.).

The awards are conferred to distinguished Kenyans by a sitting Head of State, with the National Honours and Awards Committee in the Office of the President advising on the recipients.

According to the National Honours Act, those who merit the decoration include individuals who exhibit exemplary qualities, achievements of heroism, patriotism, or leadership, and those who have made an exemplary contribution to the country in various fields.
