On Mashujaa Day, Raila Odinga, the ODM leader, made a surprise appearance at the newly renovated Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, where he was invited to speak by Governor Hassan Joho.

As he took the stage, Odinga explained why he had ordered dredging to stop in the Likoni tragedy, saying, 'When we were at Likoni the other day and ordered dredging of the channel to stop, so that the bodies of Likoni tragedy could be found, some people were asking I gave an order as who. I would like to tell them, I did so as a Kenyan,'

President Uhuru Kenyatta had arrived in Mombasa on Thursday, while Odinga arrived on Friday. The celebrations, hosted by the Kenya Navy for the first time, featured a 21-gun salute and the presence of over 200 heroes and heroines, including Eliud Kipchoge.

The renovation of the Mama Ngina Waterfront cost Sh460 million, with the National Youth Service (NYS) and the Kenya Navy involved in the preparations.

Deputy President William Ruto, Chief Justice David Maraga, and several cabinet secretaries were also in attendance.
