At least 20 people lost their lives in a devastating bus accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, October 20, 2019.

The bus, which was traveling from Lufu to Kinshasa, veered off the road and caught fire due to faulty brakes, according to Didier Nsimba, deputy administrator of Mbanza-Ngungu territory.

"The provisional toll is 20 dead," Nsimba told AFP.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the severity of the blaze, which left many bodies beyond recognition.

The accident occurred on Highway 1, a notorious stretch of road known for its high incidence of deadly accidents.
