As Saint Paul once said, our spiritual journey is like a marathon. We must put in the same effort to achieve spiritual growth as an athlete does to set a world record.
One crucial aspect of this effort is finding a spiritual pacesetter. Just as a marathon runner needs someone to set the pace, a Christian needs a guide to help them navigate their spiritual life.
Many people in business hire mentors to help them achieve their goals. In fact, several best-selling books have been written by 'super-mentors' who specialize in giving advice to other mentors.
As one wise man once wrote, 'You would not build a good house for your life here on earth without an architect. How then, without someone to guide you, can you hope to build the house of a holy life, which you will need for your eternity in heaven?'
Jesus also emphasized the importance of seeking guidance. In the Gospel of Luke, he complained that the 'children of this world' are more prudent than the 'children of light' because they seek advice and hire consultants to help them achieve their goals.
Similarly, Christians should seek the guidance of a spiritual leader, such as a priest or a pastor, who can help them navigate their spiritual journey.
While some Christians may not be comfortable with the practice of confession, it is a vital part of seeking spiritual guidance. By confessing their sins and seeking forgiveness, Christians can grow in their faith and become stronger in their spiritual lives.
