On October 20, 2019, the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) released the 10th edition of the World Giving Index, ranking Kenya as the most generous nation in Africa.
The United States Embassy in Nairobi commended Kenya for this achievement, stating, "Hongera Kenya for being the most generous country in Africa! Kenya is moving forward as a benefactor rather than a beneficiary."
Kenya's ranking was based on a study that assessed 125 countries and interviewed 1.3 million people between 2009 and 2018. The research examined three aspects of giving behaviors: helping a stranger, donating money, and volunteering.
The US was ranked as the most generous country in the world over a decade, with 58% of the population showing generosity, followed by New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, China was ranked as the least generous nation, followed by Greece, Yemen, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Serbia.
