Callum Hudson-Odoi found Mason Mount in the box in the 19th minute, but his shot brought out the best in Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
However, the long wait for a goal in the match finally came as Hudson-Odoi turned provider at the near post for Alonso to drill his shot past the Magpies keeper.
With this win, the Blues moved to third on the Premier League table, a point above Leicester City, who defeated Burnley to move into second position.
Elsewhere, Tottenham's woes continued as they had to scrap off a 1-1 draw against bottom side Watford in a match marred with VAR controversy.
