October 19, 2019 - Samsung has made the decision to discontinue its Linux on DeX beta program, a move that will see the feature dropped altogether in Android 10.
According to an email sent to those who had enrolled in the beta program, Samsung will no longer provide support for Linux on DeX in future OS and device releases.
Launched in 2017, DeX (short for Desktop Experience) allows users to extend the functionality of their devices to connected displays by placing them on special dock stations.
Over the years, Samsung has expanded support for DeX, introducing new features such as the ability to use devices as touch pads and access DeX on Windows and Mac computers via a desktop client.
However, the company has now decided to focus on other areas, leaving Linux users who had been enjoying the full-blown Linux experience on DeX in the dark.
It's worth noting that the Linux on DeX experience was unique in that it provided a full-scale desktop platform environment, allowing applications to take full advantage of the power that comes with running on a desktop platform.
