On October 19, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the Likoni Channel in Mombasa, where a vehicle slid off the ferry and plunged into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda.
The two were laid to rest at their home in Mungala village, Kilome constituency, Makueni County, three weeks after the tragedy.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had disbanded the Kenya Ferry board and sacked its members following commuter safety concerns at the Likoni Channel.
At the burial ceremony, several leaders spoke out against the tragedy, with Makueni Senator, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, blaming KFS for neglecting ferry users and County Woman Rep. Rose Museo calling for the government to improve the condition of the ferries.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka also spoke out, blaming KFS for negligence and calling for the construction of a bridge to replace the ferries.
