Kenya's triathlon scene is gaining momentum, with the national championship in Watamu, Kilifi, attracting over 150 participants.
The event, which served as the qualifiers for the 2020 ITU World Multi-Sport Championships in Almere, Netherlands, saw athletes vying for a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Among the notable performers was multi-sport world champion Kennedy Ochieng', who made the qualifying time in standard duathlon with a time of 1 hour and 59 minutes.
Ochieng', who was the only gold medallist in the last edition in Pontevedra, Spain, expressed optimism about the team's chances in the upcoming championships.
"We learnt from Spain and carried a few lessons from the event. We now need to improve on our cycling because we have good times in running," Ochieng' said.
Other notable winners included Sudi Hassan in the men's cross triathlon and Mildred Akinyi in the sprint duathlon.
"Most of us have made the qualifying times, now we need to put more effort into our training and we will be fine come next year's championships," noted Barbra Adele, a sprint duathlete.
The event was hosted at the Turtle Bay Resort in Watamu, with the aim of improving the sport and boosting local tourism in the country.
"We will keep on improving the championship having held it for the past five years. It can only get better for the sport in terms of growth," said Damian Davis, General Manager of Turtle Bay Resort.
