Kenya Shujaa and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) have made a strong start at the Safari Sevens, advancing to the Main Cup quarter-finals at the RFUEA grounds.
Published on October 19, 2019, the tournament saw Shujaa crush Russia Academy 41-0, with Bush Mwale landing a hat-trick of tries and Nelson Oyoo scoring a brace.
Shujaa had already beaten Zambia 31-0 in their Pool 'C' outing, setting them up for a strong quarter-final appearance.
KCB also made a significant impact, stunning World Rugby Series side Spain 24-7 and Africa Sevens champions Zimbabwe 19-12 to reach the knockout stage.
South Africa and Western Province also progressed to the main Cup quarters, with the Blitzbokke beating Kenya Morans 17-12 and Western Province beating Russia's Zastava 19-17 and RedWailers from the United Kingdom 15-12.
Kenya Morans, who had beaten Uganda 24-10, were forced to play Burundi in their last match of the pool, which they had to win to advance.
Shujaa's 41-0 win over Russia Academy saw Bush Mwale complete his hat-trick, while Nelson Oyoo scored a brace and skipper Andrew Amonde also crossed the line for Shujaa's 29-0 lead at the break.
Then, Brian Wandera and Michael Wanjala sealed the rout with a try each, with Wanjala converting his own try.
Meanwhile, KCB and Zimbabwe were locked in a 12-12 stalemate in the second half, before Onyango landed the winning try for KCB.
Coach Dennis Mwanja praised his team's self-belief, saying, 'It feels super to advance and thanks to my players for their self-belief. We just have to keep our focus at the knockout stage.'
