On October 18, 2019, a video recording of Sergeant Jane Asimitisi, a Kakamega police officer, went viral after she caused a scene at the Kakamega County Commissioners office.
According to the video, Sergeant Asimitisi emotionally spoke about discrimination and harassment, daring her superiors to fire her.
She claimed to have been discriminated against since 2009, when she was married to a fellow police officer, and that she had been assigned menial duties, including container duty, without any financial benefits.
Her viral video galvanized public sympathy, with many Kenyans labeling her plight as traumatizing and unfair discrimination.
They called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Ministry of Interior, and the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to take action.
However, the Deputy Regional Commander Leonard Omollo criticized her move and warned of stern action, saying 'Other duties must be done. Not just container duty.'
Sergeant Asimitisi retorted, 'I am stressed, narudi kwetu nifuge ng'ombe.'
She now awaits disciplinary action to determine her fate.
