On October 19, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge, the world's greatest marathon runner, arrived in Mombasa, Kenya, aboard a Kenya Wildlife Service plane, ahead of the country's Heroes' Day celebrations.
He was joined by Brigid Kosgei, the world's greatest female marathon runner, who had won the Chicago Marathon on the same day as Kipchoge's historic win in Vienna, Austria.
Both athletes were invited to Kenya to be honored for their outstanding achievements, which have brought great pride to the country.
On October 21, 2019, Kipchoge was officially welcomed in Mombasa as a hero, after becoming the first human to run a marathon in under two hours.
Brigid Kosgei, who had shattered Paula Radcliffe's 16-year-old women's marathon record, had run 42 kilometers in 2:14:02, breaking the previous record of 2:15:25.
Both athletes were set to be awarded by the President of Kenya for their outstanding contributions to the country's sports.
