Published on October 19, 2019, Olivia Petter's article in The Independent sparked a thought-provoking discussion about the impact of fairytales on modern society's view of love and marriage.

According to Petter, fairytales are full of 'prejudicial and archaic stereotypes,' including the notion that 'marriage is the ultimate reward.' This script, she argues, is misplaced in a culture where people are choosing to marry later or not at all.

As I reflected on Petter's article, I realized that popular culture, including social media, has a profound influence on our perceptions of love and relationships. The 'happy' couples we see on social media, with their well-manicured poses and rosy relationships, create unrealistic expectations.

But what lies behind these perfect facades? In reality, relationships are complex and multifaceted, and the 'love story template' often focuses on only one side of the story. This imbalance can lead to disappointment and disillusionment for those who enter relationships with unrealistic expectations.

Unless we strive for a more balanced portrayal of life, the grass will continue to appear greener on the other side, and the harvest will always seem more fruitful in someone else's field.
