On October 19, 2019, the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu were transported from Jocham mortuary in Mombasa to their final resting place in Salama, Makueni county.

According to autopsy reports, the two died of asphyxiation due to being deprived of oxygen, which can result in unconsciousness or death.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko shared photos of the bodies and family members on Facebook before departing for Salama.

He also sent a message of condolence to Mariam's husband, John Wambua, and their young son, Alvin, saying, 'To the widower, Mr John Wambua and the young son, Alvin, we are together brother during this difficult moment. I know this is the moment you are really feeling the pain but TUKO PAMOJA.'
