On October 19, 2019, West Pokot Governor John Lonyang'apou spoke out against the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha's directive to close schools with standard structures.
According to Governor Lonyangapuo, the directive was 'unreasonable' and would disproportionately affect his county.
He claimed that the Ministry of Education had a lot of funds that were being embezzled, adding that this was why the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had more work.
Following the collapse of the Precious Talents Academy School in Nairobi, which left 8 pupils dead, CS Magoha ordered the closure of all unsafe schools in the country.
However, Governor Lonyangapuo vowed that he would not allow any school from his county to be shut down as a result of the directive.
He stated in a video that surfaced online, 'Peace in West Pokot has started prevailing after pupils were taken to school and now with your stupidity and ego, you decide to close the schools.'
