On October 18, 2019, Kakamega county government officially launched the construction of a Sh110 million milk processing plant at Tumbeni in Malava, a project that had stalled in the past due to delayed process of identifying a strategic location and investor.
According to Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the project had been allocated Sh50 million in the 2018/19 financial year but failed to take off. However, the governor assured that all projects initiated by the county government, including the multi-million milk plant, will be completed as planned.
The factory, which will stand on eight acres, is expected to produce both fresh and fermented milk and related products once operational. Governor Oparanya presided over the official launch of the factory, which is a major boost to the county's agricultural sector.
For years, the project had been marred by claims that the county government had abandoned plans to establish the milk plant. However, Governor Oparanya has been fighting these claims, insisting that the project was still on course.
