Published on October 18, 2019, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation into the alleged loss of Sh300-400 million in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

The EACC has summoned 34 senior officials, including seven county directors and several procurement and finance department heads, to appear before them for questioning.

The officials are suspected of involvement in the award of contracts, bribery, abuse of office, and embezzlement of funds.

According to EACC North Rift manager Mutembei Nyagah, investigators have obtained documents linking the officials to the alleged corruption.

"Our officers have been camping in Elgeyo Marakwet county for a week," Nyagah said, adding that the agency will forward the officials' files to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as soon as questioning is concluded.

The investigation is focused on several contracts, including the improvement of Kaptagat-Kaptarakwa roads, maintenance of Chebororwa-Lochin road, construction of four motorcycle shades, and an EDCE centre.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has denied the allegations, calling the investigation a witch-hunt.
