Revitalizing Appraisals: A Path to Career Growth ¶
Most of us have experienced the anxiety and indifference that can come with appraisals. However, when done correctly, this process can be a valuable opportunity for both employers and employees to reflect on progress, identify areas for improvement, and plan for the future.
According to Michael Armstrong, ICAEW Regional Director for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, a more open workplace culture, facilitated by 360-degree reviews, can help employees feel more invested in the business and its success. This, in turn, can lead to improved leadership and management skills for senior management.
However, many appraisals fall short due to poor planning and execution. Meetings are often rushed, and the agreed-upon actions are left to gather dust. To avoid this, it's essential to allocate sufficient time for the appraisal, ideally between 45 minutes to an hour, and to ensure that the meeting is not constantly rescheduled.
Another crucial aspect is the frequency of appraisals. While annual appraisals may be common, they can be too infrequent, given the rapid changes that can occur within a team. Holding appraisals twice a year can help ensure that agreed-upon targets and requirements remain relevant and are being acted upon.
As an employee, it's essential to be proactive in preparing for the appraisal. Filling out a form ahead of time can be a useful starting point, but it's crucial to communicate your thoughts and goals clearly. Consider writing a summary of your best work highlights over the past six to twelve months, including endorsements from clients and team members. This can help you feel more confident and prepared during the appraisal.
As an appraiser, it's equally important to gather feedback from other team members and to create a positive and constructive work culture. By doing so, you can help your employees feel more invested in the business and its success, leading to improved leadership and management skills for senior management.
By following these tips, you can revitalize the appraisal process and make it a valuable tool for career growth and development.
