On October 8, 2019, Father Michael Maingi Kyengo, a Catholic priest, went missing while traveling from Tala to his Thatha parish in Masinga. His body was later found buried in a shallow grave with his throat slit and body cut up.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the main suspect in the priest's murder, Michael Mutunga, was arrested earlier after he was found with blood-stained clothes in his rented house in Gategi Centre in Mwea-Embu.
The DCI further revealed that the suspected murder weapon, a sharp knife, was recovered from a pit latrine at Gategi Centre in Mwea-Embu. The knife was found in a pit latrine where the main suspect had rented two rooms.
Police officers and government pathologists exhumed the body from Mashamba area, Makima location in Mbeere South on Wednesday. The body was discovered in a sack near the seasonal river, Gathingiri river, in Embu.
On Friday, a 44-year-old man, Solomon Mutava, was arrested in connection with the murder of Father Michael Maingi Kyengo. The suspect was found in possession of the priest's car, which he drove from Embu to Kilifi.
