On September 30th, 2019, the old Ksh 1000 notes were demonetized, but 60-year-old Julius Mboga from Sirondho village in Gem, Siaya County, missed the deadline.

Mr. Mboga, a retired mechanic from Brook Bond Kenya Limited in Limuru, received Sh1.5 million in retirement dues in January 2019, but failed to exchange his old notes worth Sh500,000.

His brother, Joseph Ouko, claims that Mr. Mboga may be mentally disturbed and that his state of mind could have contributed to the confusion.

As a result, attempts to have him change his money have been unsuccessful, prompting his family to appeal to the Central Bank of Kenya Governor, Patrick Njoroge, for assistance.
