ODM's Reuben Katana Wins Ganda By-Election in Kenya

Reuben Katana, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate, has won the Ganda by-election in Kenya, securing 4,177 votes.

His closest rival, Abdul Omra, who was backed by Aisha Jumwa, a Malindi MP, came in second with 2,331 votes.

Joseph Kiponda of Jubilee Party took the third spot with 588 votes, while David Mitsanze of KADU Asili received 362 votes.

The by-election was held on October 17, 2019, just a day after a chaotic scene unfolded in Ganda, with one person killed and Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa arrested.

ODM's win in Ganda comes on the heels of a similar victory in the Abakaile by-election in Dadaab, Garissa County.

On October 18, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Katana the winner of the Ganda by-election.

Abdul Omra, who ran as an independent candidate, had been backed by Aisha Jumwa, who had previously been a member of the Jubilee Party but had defected to the DP Ruto-led camp.

The Ganda by-election was marred by controversy, with the original winner, Abdulrahman Mohammed Omar, having his victory nullified due to irregularities in the 2017 election results.
