On October 18, 2019, a controversy erupted surrounding the reappointment of a deceased individual to a government board.
Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology, Joe Mucheru, was at the center of the storm after he inadvertently reappointed Robert Kochalle, who had passed away in May 2018, to serve as a board member of the Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB).
The move sparked outrage among Kenyans, with many taking to social media to express their discontent and question how many ghost workers had been placed in high-standing positions while thousands remained jobless.
Defending Mucheru, KFCB's Ezekiel Mutua attempted to downplay the issue, stating that the appointment had minor mistakes that could be easily corrected. He also blamed 'idle' Kenyans for throwing the issue out of proportion.
