On October 18, 2019, the people of Mutonguni Ward in Kitui County made their voices heard in a by-election that saw Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate Musee Mati emerge victorious.
Mati secured 2,892 votes, beating Wiper party candidate Stephen Kithuka who garnered 2,147 votes.
Independent candidate Jace Kavale came in third with 853 votes, while Jubilee's Alex Nzau trailed behind with 815 votes.
The by-election was a highly contested affair, with Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua engaging in a bitter political war to control the Ukambani region.
