Six Ways to Reduce Cancer Risk

Published on October 18, 2019

While cancer has several proven causative agents, including radiation and unhealthy lifestyle choices, there are ways to reduce the risk of developing the disease.

For instance, a 2017 study published in the journal Carcinogenesis found that regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of cancer. This is especially true for individuals with HIV and AIDS, who are at a higher risk of developing cancer due to their low immunity.

Another key factor in reducing cancer risk is vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. In fact, oncologists advise that all women of reproductive age be vaccinated against HPV, as the vaccine is more effective when administered to young girls who have not yet been sexually active.

Practicing safe sex is also crucial in avoiding cervical cancer, as HPV is often associated with multiple sexual partners.

Finally, women can take advantage of the BRCA 1 and 2 tests, which are available in Kenya today and can help determine a woman's likelihood of suffering from breast cancer in the future. If the tests are positive, women may be advised to consider mastectomy when they have completed child rearing.
