Hangovers are a common occurrence for many of us, but did you know that there are ways to minimize their effects? According to nutritionist Steve Macari, taking simple steps before, during, and after a drinking session can make all the difference.

Published on October 18, 2019, in Harper's Bazaar, Steve's advice is based on his experience as a health coach and nutritionist.

Before heading out for a night on the town, Steve recommends eating a balanced meal that includes protein and fat to act as a barrier for your digestive system against the damaging effects of alcohol. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day and adding a pinch of sea salt can also help to boost the mineral content in your body.

When it comes to what to eat before bed, Steve advises reaching for fruits high in fructose, such as apples, which can help your liver detoxify alcohol more efficiently. He also recommends taking a supplement of vitamin B1, which is essential for the body and takes a hit when you've been drinking.

Finally, Steve has a special hydration saviour that he recommends drinking as soon as you wake up with a banging headache and a stomach doing flips. The mixture of water, coconut water, orange juice, and sea salt can help to rehydrate your body and get the alcohol moving out of your system faster.

Once you're feeling slightly more human, Steve advises staying out of the sun and exfoliating to help blood circulation and get the alcohol moving out of your system faster.
