On October 8, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) advertised 10,300 internship positions, but the response was overwhelming. A total of 102,918 trained but jobless teachers applied for the positions.

According to the commission, 97,736 teachers applied to teach in secondary schools, while 5,182 applied for primary school positions.

Applicants experienced difficulties with the application process, prompting the commission to increase the system's capacity and extend the deadline from Wednesday to Thursday next week.

Of the applicants who qualify, 4,300 will be deployed to primary schools and 6,000 to secondary schools. This recruitment drive is a desperate attempt to address the severe teacher shortage in the basic education sector, which stands at over 100,000.
