Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) officials are at odds over the venue of the union's 62nd annual delegates' conference, scheduled to take place between December 16-18, 2019.
According to Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, the meeting will be held in Kakamega, while National Chairman Wycliffe Omucheyi insists that the event should be held in Nairobi due to a financial crisis the union is facing.
Mr. Sossion's decision to hold the conference in Kakamega has been met with opposition from Mr. Omucheyi, who claims that the union's constitution demands that the dates for the annual delegates' conference be fixed by the national executive council (NEC).
Mr. Omucheyi, in a letter dated October 16, 2019, advised that a notice of change of venue from Kakamega to Nairobi be issued and that a special NEC meeting be called to plan for the conference.
The conference is expected to attract 1,877 delegates from across the country, with the largest contingents coming from Central (211 delegates), Coast (139), Eastern (392), Nairobi (24), Nyanza (327), Rift Valley (503), and Western (230).
