La Liga has revived its plans to host a league game in Miami, with a formal request submitted to Spain's football federation (RFEF) to switch the December 6 encounter between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The move follows the league's unsuccessful attempt to host Girona's January meeting with Barcelona in the American city, which was met with vocal objections from FIFA and the Spanish footballers' union.
La Liga signed a 15-year agreement with Relevent Sports in August last year to promote the sport and La Liga in North America, including hosting one of La Liga's regular-season matches per season on the other side of the Atlantic.
La Liga claims that the players and coaches of both teams have been informed and have shown enthusiasm for playing in front of fans in the United States.
However, the proposal has faced opposition in the past, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino stating that he would never authorize a league match to be played outside of its territory, and RFEF president Luis Rubiales also expressing his disapproval.
