Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged to transport the remains of Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda from Mombasa to Makueni for burial on October 19.
According to Luka Mbaati, a family spokesperson, the remains will be transported from the Jocham County Mortuary in Mombasa on October 18.
On October 11, Mariam and Amanda drowned in the Indian Ocean after their car fell off the MV Harambee ferry in the Likoni area.
Following the incident, President Uhuru Kenyatta suspended the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) board, including chairman Dan Mwazo and members Daula Omar, Naima Amir, Philip Ndolo, and Rosina Nasigha Mruttu.
On October 16, the government announced that the two victims died due to asphyxiation.
"We have agreed with those in charge of the funeral arrangements that we will transport the remains of the two without any payment to the Kilome Constituency in Makueni for their burial on October 19," Sonko said.
