On October 11, 2019, the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda were finally retrieved from the ocean after a 13-day operation.

According to a postmortem examination by the state's chief pathologist, Dr. Johansen Oduor, the mother and daughter died from asphyxia, or suffocation.

Dr. Oduor confirmed that the cause of death was a lack of oxygen in their bodies, with neither suffering physical injury.

However, the pathologist was unable to establish the exact time of death due to the prolonged immersion of the bodies in the ocean.

The family's representative, Luka Mbaati, has announced plans to sue Kenya Ferry for negligence and compensation.
