On October 17, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta took decisive action to address the tragic ferry accident that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter in Likoni, Kenya.

The President revoked the appointments of the Kenya Ferry Services board members, including Chairman Dan Mwazo and members Daula Omar, Naima Amir, Philip Ndolo, and Rosina Nasigha Mruttu, through a Gazette Notice Number 9833.

According to the notice, the appointments were revoked 'with effect from the 16th October, 2019,' citing the powers conferred by section 7 (3) of the State Corporations Act.

The move comes after a devastating ferry accident on September 29, 2019, where 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, died when their vehicle slid off MV Harambee Ferry and plunged 58 meters into the Indian Ocean.

The bodies of the mother and daughter were retrieved 13 days later, and a post-mortem conducted at Jocham Hospital mortuary in Mombasa revealed that they died due to suffocation.

The family of the deceased has expressed satisfaction with the post-mortem results and has announced plans to sue Kenya Ferry Services over the incident.
