On October 17, 2019, the second suspect in the murder of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen, Peter Karanja, applied for bail in court.

According to his application, Karanja has been in police custody for over 30 days and is willing to abide by any terms and conditions set by the court if released on bail.

He alleged that he was taken from custody at Kiambu and questioned at the DCI headquarters in the wee hours of the night, claiming this was an attempt to physically and mentally torture him.

The court ruled that Karanja's application would be heard on the following Tuesday, allowing the victim's family to file their responses.

However, the family of Tob Cohen has since indicated that it will oppose the application.

Justice Daniel Ogembo also directed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to prepare a report on Karanja's condition.

Mr. Kariuki, Karanja's alias, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of killing the businessman and his case is yet to be consolidated with that of the deceased's wife, Sarah Wairimu Cohen, who was released on a cash bail of Ksh.2 million.
