On October 17, 2019, President Kenyatta took unprecedented action in the wake of the Likoni ferry tragedy, which claimed the lives of a mother and daughter.
The incident, captured on camera, sparked widespread outrage and blame towards the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) for gross misconduct and negligence.
Many argued that the deaths could have been prevented had safety measures been put in place to prevent the car from slipping into the waters.
The fact that KFS lacked a rescue team on standby and failed to install safety measures before and after the tragedy exacerbated the situation.
As calls for accountability grew, President Kenyatta announced the sacking of the entire KFS Board, including Chairman Dan Mwazo, in a gazette notice.
