On World Food Day, Vihiga County's Agriculture Minister Pamela Kimwele urged farmers to embrace technology and innovative farming methods to redefine agribusiness.
Speaking during the event, Minister Kimwele emphasized the importance of innovative farming methods in curbing malnutrition, saying, 'Youths are innovative and have the energy, I urge them to take advantage of the current funding from the Agricultural Sector Development Support Program (ASDSP) to expand their ventures.'
The county is currently at the sensitization stage on local vegetables, local chicken, and dairy (cow milk) value chains, with the aim of enabling farmers to diversify agribusiness.
Chief Officer for Agriculture Pamela Manila added that Vihiga has the potential to produce more food for local consumption, with the county currently producing 60% of what is consumed.
Manila urged farmers to double their efforts to ensure the county is food sufficient.
World Food Day is a global celebration aimed at sensitizing people on the importance of food security, with this year's national celebrations held in Makueni County.
