On Thursday, a tanker overturned on the Nairobi – Nakuru highway, spilling fuel and attracting a crowd of looters in Mai Mahiu.
The accident, which occurred on a usually busy road, caused a traffic jam as people rushed to the scene.
It is not clear what led to the accident, but the scene was quickly filled with people trying to siphon fuel from the tanker.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Kenya. In 2009, over 100 people were killed and 200 injured in a tanker explosion in Molo, with many rushing to siphon fuel from the burning vehicle.
Similarly, in August this year, an accident in Tanzania left 61 people dead and 70 injured after they rushed to an accident scene to collect fuel.
As reported by CNN, the scene in Tanzania was chaotic, with many rushing to get buckets and containers to collect the fuel.
These incidents highlight the dangers of looting at accident scenes and the need for public awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies.
