On October 17, 2019, Kenya's government launched a crackdown on high-profile drug traffickers, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i announcing the investigation into 50 cases.

Dr. Matiang'i emphasized the government's commitment to curbing the illegal narcotics trade, which has been thriving in the country, particularly in the coastal region.

As part of the efforts, plans are underway to set up a rehabilitation centre at the Miritini National Youth Service Center in Mombasa, which will benefit thousands of drug addicts from the region.

Investigative agencies will work around the clock to ensure that those involved in the drug trade are brought to justice, Dr. Matiang'i said.

The government will also establish a drug addicts rehabilitation centre by the end of the year, with the Red Cross working closely to facilitate operations at the centre.
