As the short rains continue to wreak havoc across several parts of the country, the Government has allocated Ksh 400 million to mitigate the effects of floods.

Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui made the announcement, citing the North Eastern region as one of the areas that have suffered the most.

Four people lost their lives last evening after the vehicle they were traveling in was swept away by raging waters in Kitui County.

The incident occurred at Mutindi River, where the four employees of a local telecommunication firm drowned while attempting to drive through a flooded section.

Kitui West sub county police commander John Sawe confirmed the incident, stating that two people, including the driver of the ill-fated vehicle, managed to escape unhurt.

Additionally, a flood alert has been issued in Baringo South following the heavy rains, which is likely to affect several areas including Marigat, Sintaan, Ngambo, and Salabani.

Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui stated that the allocated funds will be used for the construction of dykes and clearing of waterways in affected areas.
