On October 17, 2019, Murang'a County Government announced plans to build 2,000 houses for poor residents by 2022. The initiative aims to provide affordable housing to low-income families.
The county's executive committee member for Lands, Planning and Housing, Sarah Masaki, revealed that the county would create a rotational fund to support the project. The fund would utilize low-cost technologies to construct two-bedroom houses at a cost of as low as Sh100,000 per unit.
According to Masaki, the beneficiaries of the houses would contribute land and labor, while the county would provide the seed capital for the revolving fund and the necessary technology. The county is also open to collaborating with Public Private Partnerships and philanthropic organizations to make the initiative a success.
The county's plan involves a long-term repayment plan for the beneficiaries, allowing them to repay the money borrowed to construct their homes.
