On October 17th, 2019, a fatal shooting incident shook Malindi, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa was at the center of the chaos, which erupted after she stormed a meeting of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party agents at the home of Reuben Katana, the party's candidate for the Ganda Ward by-election.

The agents were reportedly planning how to handle the by-election, which was scheduled for the same day. However, Jumwa questioned the timing of the meeting, pointing out that the campaign period had expired.

ODM officials insisted that the meeting was for agents' training, but the explanation failed to calm the situation. The confrontation escalated into a scuffle, resulting in injuries to an unknown number of people.

Hours later, Jumwa was arrested at her home in Kakuyuni, Malindi, at around 3 am. Philip Wambugu, the Malindi sub-county Police Commander, confirmed that investigations into the incident were underway.
