Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has taken issue with the recent appointment of Mary Wambui to the National Employment Authority (NEA), citing a lack of experience in Human Resource Management.
According to Section 10 (2) of the National Employment Authority Act, a person must have at least 7 years of experience in Human Resource Management or its equivalent to serve as the chairperson of the board.
Senator Sakaja, who was one of the lawmakers behind the Bill that established the authority three years ago, has instructed his lawyers to file a petition to quash Wambui's appointment, which was announced on October 14, 2019.
The petition will name Labour CS Ukur Yatani, Attorney General Kihara Kariuki, and Wambui as respondents.
Sakaja argued that many young Kenyans who have distinguished themselves in the industry, even to the level of the International Labour Organization (ILO), are better qualified for the position.
He also criticized the government for its slow pace in implementing the NEA Bill, saying that the President's assent to the Bill was a significant milestone, but the government has failed to take the institution seriously.
