On October 15-16, 2019, the first mobile internet economy summit between Africa and China was held in Nairobi, with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, in attendance.
The summit, which saw over 200 representatives from top organizations in the field of technology and telecommunications, was sponsored by Tecno, a Chinese mobile firm, alongside Google, Facebook, Safaricom, and MTN.
Tecno's General Manager, Stephen Ha, emphasized the company's commitment to providing users with smart, smooth, and simple smartphone devices and mobile internet services, saying, 'With the digitalization and modernization of Africa, Tecno will keep providing users with smart, smooth, simple smartphone devices and mobile internet services.'
According to a report by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the number of mobile Internet users in Africa is growing rapidly, with the total number of mobile users in Sub-Saharan Africa projected to increase to more than 600 million by 2025.
The summit aimed to explore the milestones of internet connection in Africa and to bring forth new ideas in the localization of mobile Internet products, operations, and strategies in Africa.
Principal Secretary of ICT, Jerome Ochieng, Ambassador of the P.R.C to Kenya, Wu Peng, and Chairman of China-Africa Fund for Industrial Cooperation also attended the summit.
