On October 17, 2019, the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers issued a strike notice in Nairobi, citing the government's failure to address unfavorable terms of service for its members.
The union, led by chair Peterson Wachira, has given the government a 14-day ultimatum to address the grievances, which include the inhuman treatment of interns holding diploma certificates.
Wachira emphasized the need for payment of clinical officers interns, stating, "Clinical Officers Interns must be paid. The end of blame games should stop. We are together on this."
The union's decision to down tools is a result of the government's alleged failure to utilize increased allocations to the ministry of health under the presidential internship program.
