On Thursday, October 17, 2019, a severe accident occurred on Thika Road near Muthaiga Police Station, involving six vehicles.

Four buses and a double cabin pickup were among the vehicles involved in the accident, which occurred at around 6:30am.

According to witnesses, one of the buses, a Virginia Coach, skidded off the slippery road and hit the guard rail due to heavy rain in the area.

The driver of the bus reportedly lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle.

Due to poor visibility, oncoming vehicles collided with the two buses and stalled in the middle of the road.

The accident caused a huge traffic snarl up on the usually busy superhighway, with police at the scene facing difficulties in diverting traffic.

Heavy rain hampered visibility, and other motorists slowed down to catch a glimpse of the accident, further exacerbating the traffic congestion.

Drivers headed towards Ngara were forced to use alternative lanes.

Motorist Kinyanjui Kombani advised on Twitter, 'Best to use the service lane from Muthaiga outbound. Thika Rd is completely blocked.'

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the road as the rainy season sets in.

The Kenya Meteorological Department warned of intensified rainfall, with more than 40mm expected from Thursday, October 17 to Sunday, October 20 over various regions, including Nairobi.
