Published on October 17, 2019, a parliamentary investigation has revealed that the National Treasury is withholding over Sh1 billion in insurance claims for civil servants who have died or been injured in the line of duty.
The Labour and Social Welfare Committee of the National Assembly launched an investigation into the whereabouts of over Sh150 billion allocated by the National Treasury as insurance cover for public servants.
According to Labour Principal Secretary Peter Tum, the Labour Ministry has computed all the claims and sent them to the Treasury for payment.
However, the Treasury has yet to compensate the affected families, despite the government allocating Sh15 billion annually to the insurance kitty for the past 10 years.
The fund exists to provide compensation to employees for work-related injuries and diseases contracted in the course of employment.
Public servants within the definition of the manual include officers in the civil service, National Police Service, judiciary, Kenya Defence Forces, county governments, public universities, parliamentary service, state corporations, and all other statutory bodies.
